Just returned from Mount Yasur in Vanuatu, summarizing the strategy 🌋 It’s quite expensive! We spent an average of $1500 per person, including the charter flight. Not recommended if you’re not well-off!
🏠 Local accommodations are very poor. Not recommended for those who care about cleanliness. 🫠 Many things are overpriced. We were overcharged along the way, and the consumption is worse than Southeast Asia.
💰 Vanuatu is underdeveloped, and in most places, you can’t use credit cards. Bring cash and exchange it at the airport or have enough cash on hand. Many ATMs at the airport are broken.
💰 For the five of us, each person brought about $700 in cash, which should be enough.
⚠️ Overall, the cost performance is very low! Be cautious about going.
🌋 How to get there:
- 1⃣️ Home ✈️ Australia/Fiji
- 2⃣️ Australia/Fiji ✈️ Port Vila (3 hours)
- 3⃣️ Port Vila ✈️ Tanna Island (40 minutes)
- 🚗 After landing on Tanna Island, find a car at the airport and drive for more than two hours to the volcano. They use pickup trucks, and we sat directly on benches, quite thrilling and unsafe.
- 🌋 Volcano coordinates: 19°32′34″ S 169°26′5″ E
⚠️ Buy your tickets in advance. There is only one flight from Port Vila to Tanna Island each day, and the ticket is over $100. Checked baggage is 10kg, and if it exceeds, you may need to buy additional luggage allowance. 20kg costs $28 (they let us pass with 15kg at that time).
⚠️ Flights are often delayed by several hours; ours was even canceled. It’s advisable to allocate a few extra days.
- ✈️ If you can’t get a ticket but have money, you can charter a flight.
- ✈️ Charter companies include AirTaxi and Unity Airlines.
- 💰 Charter costs $2000; inquire at the airport counter.
- 💺 Seats up to 9 people.
- 🧳 Baggage and passengers together must not exceed 650KG; if overweight, unload luggage.
🏠 For accommodation, we stayed in a treehouse at the foot of the volcano. No shower water, electricity is generated at night using a generator, and you need to bring your own power strip for charging. Ask around at the airport to find transportation to the volcano.
🌴 In short, it’s like a survival adventure.
- 🌋🎫 Volcano tickets cost 8000 Vatu per person, and the round-trip drive to the volcano costs 2000 Vatu per person. A 5-minute walk is required after getting off the vehicle.
- 💁🏻 Recommended stay for ordinary tourists is 2-3 days.
- 📸 Photographers are advised to stay for 3-7 days.
- ☔️ Pay attention to the weather; if it rains, the volcanic smoke is heavy, making it challenging to capture good shots.
- 🧥 It’s windy on the volcano, so remember to wear a windbreaker.
